Uncrowned, stylish and comfortable, Crystal Symphony offers an upmarket experience on a mid-size ship, carrying 1,000 passengers. Most passengers are American. Food is varied and of a high standard. Service is excellent and there are no on-board announcements.

This smallish ship is popular with the German market and operates expedition-type cruises to relatively untouched parts of the world, such as Antarctica. There are on-board experts who give lectures about the destinations visited.

MS VolendamMS Volendam, Holland America Line (Passenger/crew ratio: 2.2)
As with other Holland America ships, Volendam has a traditional, less glitzy feel than some rivals. Despite the Dutch names given to all Holland America Line ships and the company's long European traditions, a high percentage of the passengers are American.

One of the line’s Vision-class ships, Rhapsody of the Seas has floor-to-ceiling windows, a seven-storey atrium and retractable glass roof over the pool area. There are fewer cabins with balconies than on some of the newer, bigger ships in the fleet.
