Costa Romantica was designed by the Italian Pierluigi Cerri, whose work spans architecture, exhibition design and designer stores including Trussardi and Prada. It benefited from a slight refit in 2003, some 10 years after it first embarked.

Minerva sailed for Swan Hellenic originally between 1996 and 2003. After it left Swan, it was renamed a couple of times, ending up as Explorer II in winter, when it was used in Antarctica, and Alexander von Humboldt in summer, when it sailed around Europe.

Previously the Cunard Caronia, this classic-looking ship was built in 1973. It underwent a $17-million refit before becoming Saga’s second ship in 2005. Again, it offers some interesting and unusual itineraries. The European and Filipino staff are friendly and helpful.

Upmarket and excellent quality, this cruise line is more expensive than others, but is worth the extra money. Seven Seas Mariner is bigger than the other ships in the fleet, and has a wider variety of things to do.
